It is no great feat to imagine a world in which robots will soon live alongside people, helping with daily tasks. As a starting point, robots are being designed to assist in retail and hospitality spaces and one of the leading distributors of United States such machines is ToDo Robotics that commercialize the robots and create applications for them designed to revolutionize customer engagement and operational efficiency. These robots greet shoppers at the door, recommend products tailored to the shopper’s tastes, and guides them straight to the right aisle. Essentially, they are programmed to behave like a personal shopper.

One of the brand’s most popular releases is called the BellaBot Pro that features an 18.5-inch interactive screen that projects multimedia ads, custom voice exchanges, and engaging expressions. Its built-in advanced navigation tech enables the BellaBot Pro to handle sprawling stores with precision and ease. Since its 2019 premiere, the BellaBot has become a favorite of Walmart Mexico, KFC, and more.

Marianela Nanninga is the CEO of ToDo Robotics and she has an extensive knowledge of technology, automation, and AI technology. She recently discussed her company via an exclusive interview.

Meagan Meehan (MM): How did you get interested in robots and what prompted you to start your own company?

Marianela Nanninga (MN): I’ve always been passionate about technology, but my interest in robotics truly took off in 2014 when I saw advanced robotic systems in South Korea. I was immediately fascinated and knew this was the future. Later, while working for a large company, I had the opportunity to connect with a Chinese manufacturer and collaborate on launching robotic projects. After a period of time, when my employer decided not to move forward with the initiative, I realized I was already deeply invested in the robotics industry. That’s when I knew I wanted to build something of my own, so I founded my company to drive innovation and commercialize robotics on my own terms.

MM: Why do you focus on service robots per se?

MN: Initially, I focused on service robots because they were the type I was most familiar with and among the first to gain commercial traction. A few years ago, cleaning robots were still relatively unknown, with only a few available and difficult to source. That sparked my interest, leading me to conduct extensive market research and testing to understand their potential. Over time, I explored different brands and ultimately chose to collaborate with Pudu and Gausium Robotics. I firmly believe that service and cleaning robots have a strong future as they continue to enhance automation and efficiency across industries.

MM: How involved were you in the development of the BellaBot model?

MN: BellaBot is one of many service robots we offer, and while we didn’t develop it in-house, we closely collaborate with the manufacturer, Pudu Robotics. From testing in real-world hospitality settings to refining its functions based on client feedback, we’ve helped optimize its usability. We ensure that every robot in our lineup meets the practical demands of the industries we serve.

MM: How do you envision robots impacting daily life over the next twenty years?

MN: Robots will become seamlessly integrated into our daily routines, much like smartphones are today. In twenty years, I see robots not just in businesses but also in homes, assisting with elderly care, household chores, and even companionship. In industries, AI-driven robotics will continue to optimize workflows, making workplaces safer and more productive. The goal is for robots to be intuitive, helpful, and an accepted part of society rather than a novelty or scary.

MM: Be honest, which robots are your personal favorites and why?

MN: Bellabot, by far, is my favorite. She’s incredibly reliable and has been a constant since day one. I’m always amazed by how people react to her. She’s not only become more interactive, but also much more engaging over time. The improvements keep coming, and it’s clear that people notice and appreciate it.

MM: What do you wish more people knew about the benefits of AI that will hopefully temper some of the fears of it?

MN: AI is not about replacing human intelligence but enhancing it and becoming more efficient. The biggest misconception is that AI operates independently and unpredictably, when in reality, it is a tool designed by and for humans. AI helps solve complex problems, automate tedious tasks, and improve efficiency. When developed responsibly, it can lead to better decision-making, increased safety, and more time for human creativity and connection.

MM: What has been the best feedback that you’ve gotten about your products so far?

MN: I’ve received a lot of great feedback, but one of the most meaningful for me was from a housekeeping operator who shared how empowered and fulfilled she feels in her role. She no longer sees herself just as a housekeeper, but as a robot operator. It’s truly beautiful to witness how our technology helps elevate people in repetitive jobs to the next level.

MM: What are your ultimate goals for the future of the company and is there anything else that you would like to mention?

MN: Our goal is to continue expanding the role of robotics in service industries, making automation more accessible and user-friendly. We want to see robotics evolve from being viewed as a luxury to becoming an everyday tool for businesses and individuals. In the long run, we aim to drive innovation in AI and robotics that genuinely improves quality of life, whether that’s through hospitality, logistics, healthcare, or beyond.
